Stay safe: don’t DIY your pest control

Newham-based London Network of Pest Solutions (LNPS) is reminding homeowners of the dangers associated with DIY pest control. The advice follows the launch of the “Kill Pests Not People” campaign by Tower Hamlets Council in December 2022.

Tower Hamlets Council launched its campaign in the wake of two terrible incidents involving borough residents. In one case, an 11-year-old girl was left dead and, in the other, a woman still has serious ongoing health issues after six months.

During a cost-of-living crisis, it can seem tempting to save money by going online and buying your own pest control products. However, you don’t always know where your products are coming from and if they are properly regulated. In the case of the woman with long-term health issues, the bed bug treatment she bought came from Spain and, while it was purchased through a reputable online auction site, it was fake and extremely dangerous.

Products sold in the UK must conform to strict safety standards. If they are designed for use by non-professionals, they must by law contain a lower dose of the active chemical. This means they are safer to use if you are not trained. However, a lower dose can also mean the treatment won’t work, which could result in a worse infestation and higher resistance among pests.

Managing Director Paul Cooper: “Firstly, I’d like to say these are terrible stories and our prayers go out to the two families involved.

“Secondly, while I understand the need to save money, I really would advise people to avoid DIY pest control. Many of the DIY treatments you can buy in the UK are ineffective when it comes to large infestations and, if you do have access to professional products, these can be very dangerous if not used correctly.

“Our technicians are rigorously trained to ensure they have the knowledge and experience to use these treatments safely. That means ensuring they are safe for the technician, the property owner, their families, other residents, pets and wildlife.”

LNPS’s advice follows Tower Hamlets’: Be safe! Always call a professional pest control company if you have a pest problem.
