Technicians turn to technology to improve rat catching

Technicians at London Network for Pest Solutions (LNPS) are turning to digital technology to improve the way they work.

A new type of digital rodent trap is proving to have multiple benefits for staff, as well ensuring pests are despatched quickly and reducing pesticide usage.

LNPS has been trialling the system called TrapMe which enables traps to be monitored remotely. The company is using them in locations such as lofts in residential properties and in parks.

The new traps are linked to the mobile network and managed through a special digital portal where technicians can record the location and details about the site along with an ID for each trap.

Once the traps, which have a long battery life, are in place they use mobile technology to give status updates on the secure TrapMe portal, 24/7 and in real time.

Paul Cooper, Managing Director of LNPS, said: “There are many benefits such as a reduction in travel which is good for the environment but the key thing is that the trap can be set safely and remotely. The trap then sends a message when it is triggered and has caught a rodent. This saves an enormous amount of time on revisits and if a trap is in a loft there is no unnecessary ladder climbing and loft working. Using TrapMe is so much safer for operatives and reduces risk which is very important.

“The system works in real time – rodents do not suffer and when the trap goes off an email is sent at the same time and a technician can be onsite within minutes if they are close by.  They reduce pesticide usage which means they are better for the environment. We have been impressed that the devices still give off a report if someone throws them into bushes or into the pond!”
